Agricultural and food technology

The food and agricultural sectors are facing major challenges; the demand for the production of high-quality food and feed will increase in the future and increased production needs to go hand in hand with a sustainable transition of the agricultural sector that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, halting the loss of biodiversity, uses fewer pesticides, and reduces nutrient runoff.

These are highly complex challenges and by applying forefront knowhow and developments within science and engineering, we engage in research directed towards solutions to these challenges. We have as a mission the goal to deliver knowhow contributing to solving the grand challenges in the food and agricultural sector and contribute with expertise within:

Research areas

Crop production

  • Plant Biologicals for future crop protection
  • Low-emission fertilization systems
  • Organic Soils and wetland landscape optimization
  • Robust plants for food and feed
  • Selection and genome-based breeding

Livestock systems - animal welfare, climate and environment

  • Manure management - reduced nutrient leakage and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Utilization of heat from e.g., manure and milk
  • Housing and production of ‘new livestock species´
  • Measuring emissions at the farm level
  • Conservation of rare breeds and genes

Alternative food and feed production

  • Green bio-refining in food processing
  • Alternative protein sources
  • Land and sea-based aquaculture

Smart machine technology

  • Sustainable & intelligent agricultural infrastructure
  • Robots & drones
  • Sustainable energy systems for farms

Climate and resource-efficient food processing

  • Upcycling of side streams to support circular systems
  • Food ingredients and materials
  • Food processing equipment
  • Logistic systems in the food industry

Did you know...

… that in the EU, food production and consumption account for between 22-31 percent of EU Member States' total emissions of carbon dioxide.

Collaboration with companies on impact

In the film, the sustainable focus area of Agricultural and food technology is presented. In this focus area, we develop, for example, climate-friendly and plant-based food as part of the sustainable restructuring of the agricultural sector. The film describes current research and the collaboration with the industrial partner BiomassProtein ApS.
